January 4, 2023 – Matthew 5 – Light of the World

Leviticus 5, Matthew 5, 1 Thessalonians 3

In Matthew 5, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” Matthew5:1415 NIV

From these statements you may get the impression that we are to be obvious about our faith. Maybe we should get a Christian bumper sticker or wear Christian t-shirts. Maybe we need to wear a big beautiful crucifix. That way we would not be hiding our faith.

If you read on a little bit more, you find that Jesus was not directing us to be obvious that we are his followers by what we wear or say, but, rather by what we do. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 NIV

There is nothing wrong with wearing crucifixes or Christian t-shirts. We certainly should confess with our mouths that Jesus Christ is our Lord. However, it is our actions, our good deeds, that others see, remember, and glorify God for.

Next time you are tempted to do something conspicuous to identify yourself as a Christian, look for an opportunity to do a good deed that will bring glory to God our Father.

Prayer:

Lord thank you for gifts and abilities that allow me to serve others with kindness, and good deeds. Help me to recognize and live into those opportunities. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
